Gallery closure

"The Gallery shop is closed effectively from 28 February 2023 after 16 years of operation.

Thank you to all our friends and customers for your support. Without you, our journey would not have been possible. We have achieved much in reputation, both nationally and internationally in publications, collections and interior decoration.

The journey commenced in 1963 when I graduated in Civil Engineering and with my first pay packet, purchased a new VW, surfboard and 35mm camera. A few months later I traded it in for a new Minolta SR1, and began the quest to surf, and photograph it. Surfing came first, photography second! The Geelong Camera Club was my platform to learn the skills that I required to be successful.

1964 marked my first publications of Surfcoast surfing, particularly Torquay and Bells Beach. Two years later I purchased a Nikon underwater camera and paddled out at Bells to take the first photos from the water.

1966 I was appointed Staff Photographer with Bob Weeks at Surfabout Magazine under the guidance of Jack Eden. With much help from lifelong friend John Panozzo, we managed to document the photo shoots as we did them, the names locations and dates. That data birthed our database catalogue that drives this web site.

1970 I retired from surf photogaphy to focus on a new job with Alcoa of Australia, which led to a 30 year career, relocating to WA, and surfing the new era of short boards in some serious WA waves.

1996 was my first exhibition at the National Surfing Museum, organised by Jack Finlay, and the birth of the WaterMarks concept. In late 2022 the Museum rated their collection of those hand crafted darkroom prints at their highest valuable asset level.

2006 I returned from WA and established WaterMarks Photo Gallery in Bell Street. The WaterMarks journey will continue via our internet and media platforms. A mobile device App is in the design phase."
